CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

“Just one more stop for the day.” Mason walked across the deck of the airship toward the limo.

Digby’s insane plan was in full swing. They’d already gotten the costumes, the sleigh was half-finished, Jameson had a containment system in the works for Digby’s void, and Easton was working on completing a list of the world’s remaining kids.

It had been Mason’s job to transport load after load of toys back to the airship. Digby and his horde would secure a store, then move on to the next. Mason would swing by after that and pack up each location’s stuffed animals and shove them in the back of the limo.

The task was straightforward but had taken a lot longer than he’d expected. Stores didn’t stock that many plush toys, forcing him to make a lot of stops. According to Easton—who had been spending just as long using the magic mirror to track down the world’s kids—about a third of them were located in the U.S., mostly in Autem’s capital, but Vegas held around five hundred. The rest were scattered throughout the world across hundreds of settlements and survivor groups. There were only a few thousand left in total.

That part was a sobering thought.

He’d always known that most of the global population had died in the apocalypse, but having an actual number was almost too much to bear. Judging by the statistics, it was clear that kids had an especially low survival rate.

Vegas had begun sending out rescue teams to try to find as many as possible, but the empire had a significant head start since they’d had access to scrying magic from the beginning. Not to mention multiple aircraft bases throughout the world.

Trying not to think about it, he took his hat off and dropped into the limo’s driver’s seat.

“Hey.” Becca was already sitting on the passenger side, as if waiting for him.

“Jesus.” Mason jumped, hitting the car’s horn by accident, not expecting the sudden vampire jump-scare.

“Shit, sorry.” She leaned across the center console to place a hand on his leg. “I wasn’t even doing anything spooky.”

Mason took a few deep breaths to recover. “I thought you were with Graves.”

“Nope. We finished up for the day.” She leaned back into her seat. “I figured you might want some company.”

“You sure? I thought you were trying to avoid missions?” he asked, unsure how he felt about taking her with him after she’d decided to live a normal life.

She shrugged. “I wouldn’t call this a mission. Besides, there’s still a couple of hours of daylight and I gained enough mana last night to get me close to full. So I should be safe to be around right now. And I’ve been cooped up too much lately. I’m about to go crazy if I don’t get out.”

“Okay.” He let out a long sigh and pulled the lever that raised the limo off the deck.

“That was a heavy sigh.” Becca eyed him sideways.

“What? Sorry.” He stepped on the floor pedal, feeling the car tug on his mana as it began to move.
